MOTORISTS still face severe congestion on the A1 (M) around Stevenage this afternoon following a five-car crash on the southbound carriageway between junction 6 and 4 during rush hour this morning.
Queues of very slow moving traffic currently stretch back from junction 6 at Welwyn to junction 7 at Stevenage where police have blocked the entrance to the southbound carriageway of the motorway to prevent further congestion.
All traffic is being diverted off at junction 6 at Welwyn and back on to the motorway at junction 5 and police say the A1 (M) is likely to be closed for some time while the damaged vehicles are removed and crash investigators inspect the site.
Motorists who would have used the A1 (M) travelling south from Comet country are being advised to find alternative routes.
