POLICE have closed off junction 7 southbound of the A1 (M) at Stevenage following a five-car accident between junction 6 at Welwyn and junction 4 for the A414 to Hertford.
The accident, which happened at 7.55am, has blocked all three lanes of the motorway and traffic is being diverted off at junction 6 through Welwyn. The motorway southbound is expected to be closed for several hours.
The Herts and Beds Air Ambulance helicopter landed on the motorway and has taken one male driver with life threatening injuries to a London hospital.
Latest reports say traffic is very slow moving or at a standstill just south of junction 8 at Coreys Mill and junction 6 at Welwyn.
