A1 (M) south between Stevenage and Welwyn was closed by police after a crash involving one car with five people inside between junctions 7 and 6 this afternoon.
Traffic was also at a standstill on the A602 in Stevenage as no traffic was being allowed on to the soutbound carriageway at the Novotel.
The motorway was re-opened and hour after the smash but police said there was still heavy congestion around Stevenage on roads leading to the motorway.
An air ambualnce was called and landed on the motorway but it was not needed and all five occupants were taken by road to the QE II Hospital at Welwyn Garden City for treatment to what police said were minor injuries.
