A headteacher will be putting his best foot forward at the weekend.

Jed Whelan, head at Fearnhill School, Letchworth GC, will be getting his running gear on when he competes in a special race.

Mr Whelan, 48, will be taking part in the 10-mile Great South Run at Southsea, Portsmouth, to support double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes' charity the DKH Legacy Trust.

"The opportunity to run for such a fantastic cause was too good to turn down. Kelly is a most persuasive lady! When she was guest of honour at our Celebration of Achievement Evening I offered to help her out with anything she needed......she has a fantastic memory and invited me to join her runners in the Great South Run. She said one good turn deserved another," said Mr Whelan.

"I just think the Trust has the most fantastic mission and I really want to help them in their aim to inspire young people to achieve their potential both in and out of sport.

"Young people nowadays get a bad press but sometimes having a role model or mentor can really help them achieve what they want to.
