BORO hero Scott Laird has urged the club's supporters to maintain the level of support they showed against Luton on Tuesday night as they look to close in on the summit of the league table over the coming months.

Boro's 793 travelling fans were in fine voice at Kenilworth Road and Laird says the players appreciated the fans' support.

"All those fans today were absolutely stunning," the England C international told The Comet. "To come down here after we've had a bad couple of games where we've under-performed to our standards but I think the fans have been brilliant. We just need them to keep doing that, keep coming away and at home as well - just be loud!

"I think they were louder than their fans today, all the way through we could hear them and that's what we need."

Laird netted the only goal of the game five minutes from time but revealed he had thought about crossing before bending his shot inside Mark Tyler's far post.

"I just arrived there and thought should I cross? No stuff that! I kept my head down, struck through it and it went in the back of the net."

It gave Boro the three points their team performance deserved and Laird felt the team's efforts had deserved the win with the defender paying tribute to the midfield in particular.

"It was a great result, I think all the lads are going to have a well earned day off. It was a great team performance from all the boys," said Laird.

"In midfield, Rossi Jarvis and (Kevin) Nicholls can cause teams problems but (Darren) Murphy was exceptional in midfield today just breaking things up and just giving the ball easy to Joel (Byrom) and Jukes (Andy Drury) who just terrorised

them."

A superb save from Chris Day in the dying minutes ensured Boro held on for all three points and Laird admitted he thought his goal had been cancelled out.

"We talk about my goal, but what about Daisy's (Chris Day) save," added Laird.

"You say let him shoot from 25 yards but he hit it really well and I thought it was in, I had my hands on my head but I don't know where he got that extra inch from. That's why he's one of the best keepers. We're lucky we've got Bayso (Ashley Bayes) and Daisy who are two great goalkeepers."

The Boro left back believes the result shows that they can go to the big teams and get results but also said they wouldn't get carried away.

"We're not going to get carried away with it but there are not a lot of teams that are going come here and get results through the season," said the 22-year-old. "They're a good team Luton and I think it was an excellent team performance and I think we've got to take heart and take confidence from that. We know how good we can be and we showed that today how good we can be away from home."

Boro travel to KitKat Cresecent on Saturday to take on York City and Laird is hoping they can repeat the form they showed at Kenilworth Road.

"It's a long trip but we went there at the end of last season and we got a professional 2-0 win so we know what it takes. If we can come here, we can go anywhere and get a result.

"They've made a few signings through the summer they've got a few good players but if we can put in anywhere near the performance we put in tonight I think we'll be alright.
