It happened near to the bus station and McDonald's in Town Square, Stevenage at around 1.35am on Easter Sunday.
It is believed the victim, who is a 23-year-old from Biggleswade, was approached from behind by two men and a woman. He received a number of blows to the head and body, before falling to the floor with minor injuries.
His coat and hooded jumper were then taken from him before he ran off in the direction of Matalan in Danestrete.
Dc Neil Davies is investigating and said: "This was a callous robbery where a man was assaulted unexpectedly from behind and parts of his clothing stolen from him.
