Stevenage boss sees defensive display as foundation to build upon

BORO boss Graham Westley said he was pleased with his side’s first clean sheet of the season after the goalless draw with Torquay United.

Both sides only managed one shot on target between them, although the visitors did hit the woodwork three times, and Westley said neither side could complain about the outcome.

“There wasn’t a lot between the sides as the scoreline suggests,” Westley said.

“There were no goals so both defences came out on top. (There were) chances both ways – they’ve hit the post two or three times and we’ve gone close with Griff at the death – and it could have gone either way but I don’t think anyone could have complained either way.

“I think our lads will take a lot from today. It’s important to get that first clean sheet under our belt, it’s been a long time coming and the lads have been working hard very, very hard on the training ground to make sure they get a lot better habits of that and it gives you a platform to work from.

“We all know the best sides are capable of keeping clean sheets week in week out and once you’ve got that foundation you can then build your attacking game and that’s what we do next.”
