A “DEDICATED” author and founder member of a long standing society, who was renowned locally for publishing works on the history of Hitchin, has passed away.
Pat Gadd Thurstance lived in Hitchin all her life, and was a member of Hitchin Historical Society (HHS) when it first began more than 40 years ago.
She was considered one of the modern pioneers of publishing Hitchin’s history, and wrote many books which are still sought after by the town’s local historians, including ‘Hitchin Past and Present’ and ‘Fifty Years of Change in Hitchin’.
She also inspired others interested in Hitchin’s story, gathering material and research for several works, and was a long serving vice president of Hitchin Historical Society.
“Pat’s enthusiasm, knowledge and good nature will be sorely missed by all who knew her,” said friend and chairman of HHS David Howlett.
“She will always be remembered amongst Hitchin’s local historians. Both Hitchin and Ickleford have lost a sympathetic, stalwart and dedicated friend.”
Pat was a regular attendee at HHS meetings and was supported by her late husband Cyril. She later remarried Brian, who shared her local history interests.
Her funeral will take place on Monday March 7 at 11am at St Katharine’s Church, Ickleford.
