IT’S just one week until Wills and Kate tie the knot, and people in Comet country have been letting us know how they are celebrating the big event.

The Comet reported back in February how George Caple, 76, and Shona Bodell, 47, of Stevenage Road, Little Wymondley were getting married on the same day as the Royal Wedding.

The couple are having a traditional ceremony at St Mary’s Church, Hitchin, and are having renowned accordionists Rosemary Wright and Harry Hussey play at the book signing and reception.

In the run up to their big day, the couple told us how they were getting on with their preparations.

“We’ve been frantically busy trying to get everything ready,” said Shona, who met George when she gave him accordion lessons.

“We’re very excited, but nervous. We’re just hoping that everything will come together.

“I had two fittings on my dress, which I pick up the day before the wedding. We have our rehearsal ceremony the day before at the church too.

“We’re going to have our event covered by BBC Radio Five Live, and we had offers from a chat show in America and a TV station in Brazil, but we turned them down because we’re just so busy.”

Elsewhere in the area, villagers in Great Wymondley are going all out to mark the occasion.

They’re projecting a broadcast of the wedding on a giant screen, and people are dressing up either as if they are going to the wedding or in red, white and blue colours.

They’ll then celebrate after with champagne and a hog roast, and be entertained by a five-piece band, a boules contest and a royal polo game.

Purwell School in Hitchin are also getting into the Royal Wedding spirit, and putting on an old fashioned tea room, with a wedding cake, licensed bar, magic show and Punch and Judy show.
