STEVENAGE pupils had a PE lesson to remember when Olympic athlete Marilyn Okoro made a stop at their school last week.
The 800m Olympic finalist paid a visit to Round Diamond School on Friday, after they won a competition to spend the afternoon with the athlete.
As well as doing some drills and warm ups, the children enjoyed some competitive games and were able to ask questions after the session.
“We got the kids going and they really enjoyed it,” said Marilyn, who is now gearing towards this year’s World Championships.
“I think that they were excited to see a GB athlete. We went through all of the basics of athletics and they all responded really well. It’s good that they can get an insight into the sport.
“They’ve got a fantastic all weather facility here. I think it’s so important that youngsters get the opportunity to participate in sports.”
The athlete, who has been named as one to watch for the London Olympics, is hoping next year to improve on her sixth place from Beijing.
“2012 is so soon, the bid doesn’t even seem that long ago,” she said.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to run in front of friends and family. You get such a massive advantage of getting a home crowd. I’m working towards it. This year will be a massive stepping stone.
“Athletics is the basis for most sports, and the London Olympics will help put athletics on the map which is really important.”
