THE future of a policing team’s base in a town centre hangs in the balance.

Talks were taking place between Herts Police and the Baldock Community Association for two Baldock PCSOs and one police constable to set up an office in the Baldock Community Centre after the town’s police station closed down last year.

However, plans are up in the air while the two parties negotiate costing for the refurbishment needed to set up the office.

Chief inspector Donna Pierce said: “Initial plans to create a fully-functioning police office at Baldock Community Centre have proven too costly but we are not ruling out a more basic facility, that will still allow office functions to be carried out, and we are still open to offers of accommodation elsewhere in the town.”

Costing done by the authority would mean spending in excess of 10,000 to have a fully-functioning police base.

She added: “We are still exploring options for a police office in Baldock to give the town’s Safer Neighbourhood Team a local base. Currently they spend most of their shift in and around the town but have to complete any paperwork at Letchworth Police Station.”
