National treasure Clare Balding is the latest big-name author to beat a path to Letchworth to charm fans and promote her work.

The unflappable sports presenter and enthusiastic promoter of all things outdoors will be at the town’s Broadway Cinema on Sunday, November 30, at 4pm.

She’ll be talking about her book My Family And Other Rambles in an event promoted by David’s Bookshop, just along Eastcheap.

In Clare’s family, walking just took too long – she galloped through the countryside and she galloped through life.

The former amateur jockey was born into high horsey circles – her dad trained winners for the Queen – and when she moved into sports presenting it was her expertise in the sport of kings that gave her a leg-up.

But it was her role helming TV coverage of the 2012 Olympics that made her a national treasure – that, and helping to create the Mobot signature with which runner Mo Farah celebrated his gold medal triumphs.

Alongside her sports work, she hosts a long-running radio show called Ramblings, promoting the benefits of walking and enjoying the English landscape.

Her adventures on foot have helped her discover the mad, hardy glory of Britain and its people – but also her family, her friends, her beloved dog Archie, and ultimately, herself.

Her first book, My Animals and Other Family, was a runaway bestseller and her new work, My Family And Other Rambles, centres on the expedition she embarked on with brother Andrew to cover the 71-mile Wayfarer’s Walk along the south coast.

If you’d like to be at the Broadway event, tickets are £20 and include a copy of the hardback book.

There’s more sports writing on offer at the bookshop itself on Tuesday evening, when sports writer and author Ned Boulting will be talking about 101 Damnations: Notes From the 101st Tour De France.
