A jazz event exploring the slave trade and its connections with the Christian faith is coming to Baldock.

n Evening of Jazz will tell the story of the emancipation movement in parallel with the story of the Bible.

Host Jon Herring has chosen songs with lyrics to emphasise these two stories, with the set list including Go Down Moses, Wade in the Water and Jesus is the Rock in The Weary Land.

The event will feature a host of internationally acclaimed jazz artists and see vocalist Sarah Ellen Hughes take to the stage.

Having been a professional singer for 12 years and handling principal vocal duties for prominent bands such as the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, the former pupil at Highfield School in Letchworth is now a primary school teacher by day and a jazz singer at night.

Sarah has sung for Cleo Laine and Quincy Jones, and won the international jazz singing competition Jazz Voices in 2011.

Andre ‘Saxman’ Brown is a saxophonist and singer who performs internationally with his events band Entourage at exclusive celebrity parties.

The event will take place at Knights Templar School in Park Street on Friday, March 6.

Tickets are £7 in advance or £8 on the door.

They are available from the event hosts, Christchurch Baldock, and you can buy yours by emailing admin@christchurchbaldock.org.uk or calling 01462 895460.

Proceeds from the evening go towards A21, a Christian charity seeking to abolish human trafficking. Visit www.a21.org for more details.
