Historian Anthony Beevor’s latest book, examining a grim chapter of the Second World War in forensic detail, will be the focus of a special author event in Letchworth at the end of the month.
He will be talking about Ardennes 1944 - Hitler’s Last Gamble and signing copies at the town’s Spirella Ballroom on Thursday, May 28.
It’s a much praised work which the Spectator described as a book that “makes us fear the chaos and the fear as if every drop of blood was our own – compellingly readable, deeply researched and beautifully written.”
The bitter fighting in the Ardennes as 1944 ended involved more than one million men, and is now agreed by historians to be the greatest battle of the war in western Europe.
The author, a former soldier, has already written much-praised work about other milestones of the war, including Stalingrad and D-Day.
His most recent book The Second World War was a number one bestseller in Britain and abroad, and has already been translated into 23 different languages.
