A stirring mix of music and the military will be earning a salute from picnic punters in Hatfield on Saturday evening.

That’s the date for this year’s Battle Proms Picnic Concert, with organisers promising sublime classical music, carefully choreographed Spitfire and cavalry displays, dramatic cannon fire and a stunning firework finale, all set in the beautiful leafy parkland of historic stately home.

The Battle Proms event takes much of its historical inspiration from the Napoleonic wars, and this year marks the 200th anniversary of Napoleon’s final defeat at Waterloo.

The Battle Proms team are also planning to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and 70 years since the end of the Second World War with a number of additions to the programme.

These include an Battle of Britain evening salute with gunners heralding the arrival of the Grace Spitfire with a volley of shots from a vintage field gun.

Gates open at 4.30pm with a Napoleonic cavalry display at 6.20pm, upbeat vintage vocals from the Rockabellas at 7pm and the gun salute at 7.55pm before the music programme gets under way at 8pm.

BBC presenter Pam Rhodes is the host and the New English Concert Ochestra conducted by Douglas Coombes will be playing popular classical hits by Tchaikovsky and Beethoven.
