There’s an unlikely name on the bill at tomorrow night’s comedy fundraiser to help fill local Labour party coffers.

It’s the third Stand Up For Labour gig staged in aid of the Hitchin & Harpenden constituency team, and the latest funfest will be staged at Letchworth’s Four Emblems Club.

Taking the opening spot is accomplished stand-up, actor and writer Susan Murray, who has written and appeared with the likes of Jeremy Hardy, Jo Enright, Arthur Smith and Stephen K. Amos.

And headlining is the deadpan Norman Lovett, still best known as one of the incarnations of Hollie the ship computer in cult sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf but something of a laconic legend on the live circuit.

But sharing the platform with those two left-leaning laughter-makers is the unlikely figure of Sir Ian Bowler MP.

Sir Ian, absolutely not to be confused with Letchworth’s man in the House of Commons, long-serving North East Herts MP Sir Oliver Heald, comes across as a political panto villain. If you remember Rik Mayall’s venal and vicious New Statesman character Alan B’Stard MP you’ll know what to expect – it’s the cruel, corrupt and self-serving picture of the party in power from the point of view of the party that...well, isn’t.

Sir Ian, the creation of comedian Nathaniel Tapley, is rumoured to be running for London mayor but before he gets seriously into that campaign he’s aiming to repeat a smash hit set which has gone down a storm at Stand Up For Labour events all over the country.

The night is hosted by Crispin Flintoff, who set up Stand up for Labour in 2012 in order to cheer up Labour members in his own constituency and has since branched out to put on more than 160 events in England, Scotland and Wales. In the process he has raised more than £100,000 for the Labour Party funds.

Doors open for tomorrow night’s gig at the Station Road venue at 7pm.

Tickets cost £20 on the door and there will be a raffle to help keep the cash flowing in and organisers say that all members, supporters and ‘don’t knows’ are welcome.
