A GOLF enthusiast and former president of the Hertfordshire Golf Union has died aged 82.

Michael Amos died in hospital last week after being taken ill at his Letchworth GC home.

Previously a member of Aspley Guise and Knebworth golf clubs, Mr Amos joined Letchworth Golf Club in 1981.

He subsequently served as captain and president of the club, and was later awarded honorary life membership.

In 1985, he became a committee member of Hertfordshire Golf Union, an association of 73 clubs.

He was a great supporter of junior golf in the county, and saw a succession of young players gain international honours during his 10 years as junior organiser.

In 1997, he was elected county president of the union, serving for three years.

He later became a life vice president and was also a past captain of the Herts society of golf captains.

A message on the Hertfordshire Golf Union website describes Mr Amos as a "long-time servant of Hertfordshire golf".

Paying tribute to a close friend and colleague, county president Tony Bailey said: "Michael was instrumental in my becoming secretary of the Letchworth club for 12 years, and in joining the county committee in 1988.

"In working with him in supporting the juniors I know the great part he played in their progress."

Mr Amos, who used to work for BAe, leaves a wife Alison, daughter Sally and son Martin.

His funeral took place last Thursday.
