A RED carpet fit for a queen is being offered by a Biggleswade store.

Two pieces of the carpet exclusively made for the opening of the Humber Bridge by the Queen on July 17, 1981, are being offered by Carpets4Less at their head office on the London Road Trading Estate.

The pieces of carpet, one 9.85 metres and the other 10.80 metres long and both being 3.66 metres wide, were made by Shaw Carpets of Darton, Yorkshire, for the event.

The carpets came into the possession of Carpets4Less owner Malcolm Gordon when Shaw Carpets closed almost a decade ago.

Since then the carpets have been stored at Mr Gordon's Biggleswade warehouse and now he is keen to either sell them or give them to a charity.

The two bits of carpet were the first test runs of the original carpet and are in pristine condition. But Mr Gordon believes they are of historical interest to the Humber region.

"They are the same as the carpet that was used on the day the bridge was opened," said Mr Gordon, who lives in Langford.

"They are very good quality. I'm not really worried about the money. I could end up giving them away to anyone or a society on Humberside who is interested.

"To people on Humberside these are a bit of history and to be honest I don't want them any more.

"The carpets may be 25 years old but they are as good as the day they were produced.

"For all I know the original carpet that was used on the day may have been lost so these might be of historical value."
