AFTER some confusion, councillors voted for the heart of Hitchin town centre to house 140 new residential units to be built on the Brookers Yard, Peter Fish and Suzuki Premises off Paynes Park. Many onlookers walked out of the meeting in disgust.

* The Ashwell and Morden Rail User group staged a number of stunts when First Capital Connect reduced their Ashwell and Baldock services. They braved the cold in a naked protest, gathered their children at the train station to plead and clogged up Letchworth train station with their cars to prove a point. They also submitted a petition, appealed to councillors for help and pledged to continue their campaign until changes are made.

* Elsewhere demonstrators took to the streets in protest against the decision to scrap plans for a hospital in Hatfield and to concentrate acute and emergency services at either Lister or the QEII.
