A LIFEGUARD has run a marathon for charity - on a treadmill.

Kevin Holt (pictured), of Strathmore Avenue, Hitchin, ran the 26.2 miles at the Royston Leisure Centre in just under three hours.

The 25-year-old, who works at the centre, chose to run the distance in aid of the Meldreth Manor School, which caters for 90 pupils with cerebral palsy and learning difficulties, and the Royston Day Centre.

Speaking of his achievement, Mr Holt said: "I am a keen athlete and had to train very hard for this challenge.

"This was my first marathon, so to complete it in under three hours is a great achievement. I have been told that it is twice as hard to run a marathon on a treadmill because you cannot stop for a rest and have to keep going."

Mr Holt is no novice to the world of athletics. He is a regular triathlete for Milton Keynes Athletic Club and has also represented Great Britain.

He is also in training for Ironman UK 2007, to be held in August next year.

Mr Holt also said that he would continue the fundraising and is thinking about swimming the English Channel.
