WORK will start soon on a £185,000 project to improve surfacing on the A1 near Sandy.

Overnight work will start at the Sandy roundabout next Monday, September 18. It is estimated the work will last for three weeks.

To reduce disruption and to provide a safe area for the workforce the A1 will be closed overnight in one direction at a time between the A1 Black Cat roundabout and Beeston south of Sandy.

During the week starting September 18, work will necessitate the closure of the A1 southbound overnight.

The following week work will mean the closure of the A1 northbound, also overnight.

During the final week of the resurfacing there will be a mixture of north and southbound overnight closures.

To ensure the safety of drivers a 24-hour, 30mph speed limit will be in place on the A1 for half a mile on either side of the Sandy roundabout.

Simon Amor, Highways Agency project manager, said: "Resurfacing the A1 Sandy roundabout will ensure a high quality and safe road surface for road users.

"Before the resurfacing can be done, the road workers will plane off the top level of the carriageway leaving an incomplete road surface. Therefore a 24-hour, 30mph speed limit will be in place to ensure the safety of drivers and the workforce.

"We will be doing the work overnight to avoid disruption. However, drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to follow the diversion routes carefully."

During the operation three manholes will also be repaired, the yellow lining on the road will be renewed and anti-skid surfacing will be put down on the approaches to the roundabout.
