SECONDARY schools in Stevenage look set to be transformed thanks to a £150m Government handout.
The money has come from the Building Schools for the Future programme which was set up to fund rebuilding and refurbishment projects at UK secondary schools.
The £150m will be available to Herts County Council around 2008/2009.
The council will now develop plans on how their schools will benefit from the funding.
Stevenage schools were chosen because of their "GCSE results and levels of socio-economic deprivation".
"It is great news for Stevenage. The money is allocated according to the perceived need of the schools in the area," said a council spokesman.
"There are a lot of Stevenage schools that need a lot of work."
Minister for schools Jim Knight described the initiative as "a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform education in Hertfordshire.
