A HEROIC taxi driver has spoken about how he grabbed a knife from his attackers during a robbery.

Mohammed Janjua, 31, was attacked by two men wearing balaclavas and wielding a 13in knife and a hammer in Shephards Mead, Hitchin, on Monday morning.

During the robbery they stole £100 and two mobile phones from his cab, but when one of his attackers was looking away Mr Janjua grabbed the knife and turned the tables on his attackers.

Mr Janjua, who works for Cabstar in Willow Tree Lane, Hitchin, explains: "I had been called out to a job at about 12.40am but when I got there about 10 minutes later nobody was at the address.

"While sitting in my car two men approached me and one opened the passenger's door and the other opened the driver's door. One had a knife and other had a hammer and they were both wearing balaclavas and started demanding money."

Mr Janjua had not long begun his shift and had no more money in the cab so the attackers started looking inside to see what else they could take.

Mr Janjua said: "The one with the knife was too busy looking for things and he stopped concentrating on me and I managed to grab the knife from his hand and I jumped out of the car.

"The man with the hammer took a swing at me but I stepped back out of the way and I felt it go across me. The men then ran away and left me alone."

Mr Janjua said he was worried that if they did not find anything else in the car they would hurt him.

"That is the only reason I grabbed the knife," he said.

Hertfordshire police have said they are linking the attack with a similar incident in Stevenage, as reported in The Comet last week.

In the Hitchin attack the man with the knife has been described as black, between 5ft 8in and 6ft tall, slim, in his early 20s and was wearing a black balaclava, black jumper and black tracksuit bottoms and gloves. He was also wearing a silver chain link on his wrist.

The second man was also wearing a balaclava and gloves, and also wore a black jumper and black tracksuit bottoms.
