THOUSANDS of people have signed a petition which raises concerns about the safety of a road junction in Comet country and calls on Herts Highways to take action.

This week, Letchworth Garden City Council (LGCC) will present a petition containing almost 3,500 signatures to Cllr Stuart Pile, Herts County Council's portfolio holder for resources and environment, regarding the filter lane which connects junction 9 of the A1(M) with Letchworth Gate.

The filter lane was created in 2006 as part of a roadworks scheme that cost an estimated £1m.

It has been engineered in such a way that drivers have to swivel considerably in their seats at the lane's junction, in order to see oncoming traffic from the busy Letchworth Gate roundabout.

Dozens of drivers have complained that the junction is dangerous.

Speaking about the petition, Cllr Chris Harlow, vice chairman of LGCC, said: "This is not just signatures on a piece of paper - it is a genuine response from the community to a widely acknowledged issue.

"I hope that this level of public concern persuades the powers that be to listen and to seek a safe and sensible solution to this ongoing problem.
