Freight lorry catches fire on A505 in Hitchin

Firefighters are dealing with a freight lorry that has caught fire on the A505 in Hitchin.

The container has caught fire on the A505 Fishponds Road, between Butts Close and Hitchin Town football ground Top Field.

Firefighters are tackling the blaze at the scene using hosereels, while black smoke billows into the air. Police are also at the scene.

A spokesman for the Herts force said they were called to the scene near the town’s outdoor swimming pool at about 2pm, and that the vehicle was a 30ft articulated lorry with cars to be scrapped on the back.

The road is closed while the incident is dealt with. The Comet is awaiting further details from the emergency services.
