Spring Clean Letchworth 2011 is set to take place on Saturday, May 21.

The annual community initiative to help make the garden city an even more beautiful and attractive place to live and work is planned, organised and run by a team of volunteer local residents.

Following last year’s very successful event, Spring Clean Letchworth (SCL) invites all residents, schools, businesses, community groups to be inspired to make a difference by joining in the clean-up event for an hour to two - and to have fun at the same time.

Last year, 307 people, including local community groups, schools, scouts, guides and churches, worked in teams in different parts of the garden city and collected over 130 bags of litter, of which more than half was recycled.

This year’s planning group looks forward to an increased number of local community pick-up teams to cover more areas.

Plans are well under way for the event which has received strong support from Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation and North Herts District Council.

Heather Cotton, SCL’s team leaders’ coordinator, said: “The project combines three objectives - to help clean up the garden city, to bring people together in local community groups, and to create a deeper awareness and concern for our environment and the planet.”
