Regarding 'In Touch On Faith School' - issue June 22 - the whole point of attending a faith school is to continue a child's religious education at school as well as at home. It has nothing to do with academically superior schools, although John Henry Newman School is an academically superior school in its own right. If this school was forced to become a non-faith school there would be no Catholic School for miles. The pupils, at present, get free transport to and from school if they live more than three miles away and I was under the impression that this also applied to pupils attending non-faith schools.
The John Henry Newman School is voluntary-aided so the free transport is one of the few privileges given to these pupils by Hertfordshire County Council. The saving made by stopping this free transport for all faith schools would, I believe, be in the region of £400,000pa.The cost of running one non-faith school with full county funding would be a lot more.
