SIR - I am pleased to read that Rex Gooch is happy to have a nuclear power station in Letchworth and have the waste in his back garden. He assures us that nuclear power is far and away the safest and cleanest option. I presume that he has not heard about Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, or Dounreay.

I presume he has discussed this with his neighbours in Letchworth and they are all happy to have a nuke on their doorsteps, although I would have preferred to see the plant 300 miles further away from Stevenage where I live.

I agree with your headline 'Turbines are not the solution' but surely any power that they generate means that less has to be provided by smoky coal or oil .
