It is with great sadness that I learned of the demise of the Cricketers Cricket Club in last week's edition of The Comet.

I spent the best part of 25 years battling against them on the cricket field, playing in the right spirit, and enjoying their banter and company after the game - something lacking in a lot of teams today.

I feel this whole episode could be a warning to the rest of us who have enjoyed the tradition of true village cricket over countless generations and follow that unfortunate path of the Cricketers.

In these days of rising obesity and selfish individualism, the most basic principles of learning about team play and sportsmanship coupled with the social interaction of multi-cultural people from various walks of life is often decried and ridiculed by those who think they know best.

Dismiss these basic principles at your peril, your children's peril and your grandchildren's peril.
