I was very sorry to hear of Burgess Books having to close. My grandmother worked there for some years in the 1970s. It is true that if you do not want to lose it, use it. Luckily we have an excellent independent bookshop in Ely who will provide personal reviews of books and arrange book launches and evenings with many local and well known authors speaking, the most recent being Alexander McCall Smith, author of The No. 1 Ladies Detective agency. The larger book sellers are fine for a three-for-two bargain, but if you really want quality service and advice you need the smaller business because it is in their interest to give customer care. I sincerely hope Hasleys and Gatwards are more successful in maintaining their custom to people locally.
