THE disease-ridden oak tree which held historical importance in Letchworth GC was felled last week for good reason as far as I'm concerned.

There are those who have expressed their shock and dismay at North Herts District Council's (NHDC) decision to cut down the tree in Broadway Gardens, after it was found to have fungal disease.

But, while there is no disputing the fact the tree held an important and imposing place in the town, I do not blame NHDC for felling it.

People's safety should always come first and I'm sure residents would be the first to complain if the council did not prioritise in this way.
