How right you are in last week's Last word, if we are to lose the curse of pollution from aircraft and the building of yet more runways, then we as a nation must use the railways to travel. I see that now one can go from Cambridge to Oxford by air. Why is there not a railway line from Cambridge to Oxford? Indeed from the east coast to the west coast to avoid going through London.

It is said that trains could not cope with the increase in traffic if we did not have air travel, why not? If it means building more railways, then build them, I would rather lose land to railways then to airports. I would rather the noise of trains to that of aircraft. I would rather the cleanness of rail travel to the carbon dioxide pumped out by planes.

One can go anywhere in Europe by train. We do not need aircraft, so why do we allow these monsters to rule our lives?
