SIR - It was not long into my six-week stay at Lister Hospital on Ward 10 that I began to wonder why the nursing staff did not rush or bustle about their caring duties, despite the fact that they were so busy, this being because that they were working with a bare minimum number of staff.

Gradually, I realised that not only were they tired, by the end of a 12-hour shift (often going on for a further hour) but that the nursing staff were simply exhausted. Another pair of hands or two would have eased the pressure.

Like your previous correspondent of last week, the care and attention I received was of the highest quality. I can only hope that such pressures are eased before these dedicated NHS employees fall sick themselves.
