With the issue of climate change and the prospect of an imminent environmental crisis, I wonder why it is so extremely difficult to recycle waste in Hitchin. Yes, we have a token newspaper and glass recycling bin which is much appreciated, but living in Hitchin, I have to drive over to either Letchworth or Stevenage, pumping out carbon dioxide as I go, in order to recycle plastic, wood or any other unwanted items. The Hitchin centre is not a viable option for most people who want to recycle waste as it is open for such a short time, approximately two hours on a Sunday. Added to this, is the problem of people dumping unwanted goods at the side of the road because there are no local facilities for them to dispose of their items.

Surely, in order for individuals to play their part in protecting the environment, councils too have a responsibility to provide them with the means by which to do so. I am aware of a number of people who have raised this very important issue, but see no evidence of things improving at a local level.

I view this as a very serious matter and one which demands an urgent response from our local council.
