Lack of respect by adults

SIR - Noisy baby claim drives mum from café. At the risk of dragging this subject on another week, I would like to reply to J Woods' letter. How can you say well done to the manager at Morrison's who asked Gemma and Summer to leave. Do you have children? Or are you one of the old brigade that children should be seen and not heard? Yes, there are mums out there who should take parenting classes. They shout at their children and swear at them in public, and we all tut-tut at this sort of behaviour. It is the parents' fault with these incidents. Gemma is a good mum, she is kind, considerate and never drags her children out at all hours of the day and night as your letter suggests. Hey, guess what. A one-year-old child cannot speak if she/he is kept waiting for her food and if she/he is hungry she/he will cry (news flash). At least you show some common sense with your special needs comment, it is a pity it does not stretch any further. You should in fact be more worried about the service at Morrison's as this is what caused the incident. I too have had problems at the cafe in the store, luckily my daughter was three and I could reason with her. That was two years ago and I have not been back since as the service was appalling. Another point - you suggest that Gemma was ignoring Summer, this is not the case. Gemma never ignores her children. If you wish to go into cafes and restaurants where you can be sure there are no crying children or children having a paddy I suggest you go and live in Bournemouth. By the way if you think I am another young mum who does not know how to look after her children you would be wrong. I am a mum of four, ranging from 24 to five, and I am 47 years old with parents who were born in the 1920s so I know the old rules and both Gemma and I use them.

SIR - I would like to say to J Woods of Letchworth, that I was appalled at the comment about children in cafes and restaurants. I myself was appalled that the manager spoke to Ms Jonas that way, and even more so that her young child was waiting 45 minutes for her lunch. Can I just say, J Woods, I am totally guessing when I say this but either you haven't had children or if you have then you have totally forgotten what is its like when small children are hungry. I am a mother and childminder so I know how it feels. Also us mums have to do our shopping to be able to feed our children and if you would like a coffee or something after your shopping don't you think us mums deserve one as well. I will, like Mrs Banks, not be using Morrison's again and I always have children in my care and would like to go where they are made to feel welcome as shopping is stressful enough anyway. I would also like to say no wonder kids of today have lack of respect for their elders as it is a two way thing, and us adults are all so quick to complain but I bet if little Summer had been sitting quietly then no one would have commented.
