SIR - This is the first letter I have written to a newspaper, but I am fed up with the powers that be and what they want to do to our town. Have they never heard the saying if it ain't broke it don't need mending? The Arena part of the town is possibly the only part of Letchworth shopping centre that has 100 per cent of its shops trading. Most of those traders have been there for more years than the rest of the town put together. The main problem that most of LGC shops suffer from is extortionate rates. Lower them, fill the empty shops, i.e. the old bingo hall and McDonalds, and put right what is wrong. Stop spending our money on things that we do not want changing.
