SIR - I have received from Letchworth Garden City Council a somewhat sophisticated circular.
I have no idea how much, at taxpayer's expense, it cost to produce and distribute.
It features, in a self congratulatory manner, what it refers to as a "Fun Day" claiming that it attracts almost 20,000 visitors to the town centre. I understand that the figure quoted probably represents over 50% of Letchworth's population. It so happened that my wife and I were in the city centre at what is regarded as the busiest time of the day. We estimated that not more than 50 people were watching, most of them more bemused than interested, let alone "excited".
Was the council being economical with the truth? Perhaps it just forgot to insert a decimal point.
