THE Comet's litter campaign has certainly raised my awareness of just how much rubbish is blighting our otherwise green and pleasant land.
I really don't understand the mentality of those who drop litter. What if everybody acted in the same irresponsible manner? We would be up to our necks in rubbish.
While local authorities and police community support officers have the power to issue fixed penalty notices of between �50 and �80 to litter louts, and failure to pay could result in a fine of up to �2,500, I think punishment should be extended to a custodial sentence for repeat offenders.
There certainly needs to be more of a deterrent.
