SIR - Councillor Worland's letter (October 2) misrepresents the truth. At Letchworth Council meetings the Mayor, who addresses residents' questions, does not give straight or any answers to them.

He will not retract statements which are clearly misleading and often demonstrates contempt for questioners. It is little wonder that many of the public who attend these meetings are frustrated. The planning process is an issue for Letchworth's residents. In my view, it does not require £32,000 of our money to re-establish this fact and then to allocate £3,000 more of our tax to ask lawyers how this can be communicated. As the parish poll demonstrated, the great majority of citizens do not want the council and I ask councillors who attack those who speak out to instead listen and debate the points to allow the electorate to decide through the town council elections in May 2009 what is needed.

Cllr Worland's letter which is written on behalf of the town council implies that I am responsible for running a false website, misleading pensioners and that I set out intentionally to do so. None of this is true, nor can I believe that there has been any intent to so mislead.

I support the HELP campaign, as do many residents in Letchworth, just a few of whom are shown on the HELP's website at helpletchworth.co.uk

SIR - I fear that Councillor Worland's letter is yet more of the delusional drivel that we, the voters of this town, have come to expect from the Letchworth Parish Council.

I am proud to say that I am a member of the HELP Letchworth team and must address the misleading nonsense that the parish councillors will keep blurting out.

I am 45, a mother of three, from a perfectly ordinary background. I am not a member of the golf club and am not affiliated to any secret or elitist groups or organisations; neither am I controlled by or speaking for the forces of patriarchy or the dreaded Heritage Foundation. I am not old, a boy, or part of any network.

I have lived in this town for 17 years and have worked in both paid and voluntary capacities for the benefit of the members of the community.

I passionately believe in democracy and the right of individuals to influence public life. I was appalled in 2005 when this group of people crawled out of the woodwork and on the say so of less than 12 per cent of the town's eligible voters set themselves up in business as a council, spending our money on whatever they choose persisting all the while with the pretence that they represent and speak for you and me.

I have loved this town from the outset and admired its strong traditions of local democracy and social improvement. I believe that the parish council adds nothing to the community life of Letchworth and does a lot to create division and disharmony. I want to see the back of it and look forward to the simple choice that the voters of the town will be able to make next year.
