SIR - Sad to say it is not just upper Icknield Way that suffers from thoughtless parking ('Bad Parking' letters page October 12), but virtually the entire length of the road.

Every working day, commuters also crowd the road from the start of Norton Common to the junction of Norton Way North so that residents can neither park their cars outside their homes, nor easily access the road where they have off street parking due to the appalling lack of visibility.

On occasions we have had to park four or five hundred metres from our home just so commuters can park for free. Walking this distance in poor weather, with a boisterous small child and laden with a week's shopping just so a non-resident commuter can save a couple of quid on car park charges is galling to say the least.

As for visiting friends, elderly relatives and tradesmen who also need to park close by - no chance!

Putting inconvenience to one side, there is also the danger element posed by such widespread and wholesale on road parking.

In the past year a number of pets and at least two deer have been killed as they try and cross the road from between parked cars. We feel it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured trying to cross Icknield Way. We have urged the council to introduce a residents' parking scheme to prevent such wide scale roadside parking, but they claim it will move the problem elsewhere. To this I would ask the council how far will a commuter walk to get to the station and finally, why is the council supporting and defending commuters' rights rather than residents?
