I read the front page article about the parking problems at Mount Garrison, Hitchin, with interest, as I was a councillor for this area in the late nineties. The issue of parking problems on this road was raised in the council committees and various options were discussed, including the possibility of residents' parking permits.

We are now some considerable time on and the problem still exists and the councillors and officers who have been running the District Council all these years have still not resolved the issue. How many more years have to pass before something is finally done to help the residents of Mount Garrison?

What is needed is a properly thought out parking policy which takes account of the needs of residents who live in and close to the town centre, people who work in the town, and those who visit the town for shopping or recreation. Ad hoc hefty increases in parking charges to raise revenue are not the answer. Is it too much to ask for some joined up thinking and some action to follow?
