SIR - With reference to the story about the historic buildings under threat of demolition in Hitchin, it is disgraceful that demolition of these fine buildings could even be contemplated.
Why is it that a quick profit for developers is deemed to be of greater importance, than the conservation of such buildings which make Hitchin such an interesting and attractive place. We can look back with incredulity at the town planners responsible for such monstrosities as the Churchgate Centre and Crown House; let us not see history repeating itself by us allowing even more of our heritage to be destroyed for ever. Once lost, it can never be regained and future generations will not thank us.
