SIR - We moved to Baldock earlier this year having lived in London for all our lives (under 40 years), and cannot see why anyone would complain about Baldock town centre.
The issue of parking is questionable, Baldock High Street is walkable from everywhere in Baldock. Dan Strong stated "...Local Authority conspire to abuse its residents..." try Walthamstow in East London where every side road is or soon will be a one-way road to ensure complete congestion. It takes an hour to drive from one side of Walthamstow to the other although it is a similar size to Baldock.
Tesco and the bypass are not to blame for anything, the shops and market must compete for business. My wife tried four times to get into Airy Fairy on Hitchin Street without success because it was always closed (including 11.30am on Saturday). The market is poorly attended for the same reason. I went there on market day and nothing was there (the most I have seen is three stalls).
The bypass is not to blame either. This has re-routed traffic driving through Baldock, ie not stopping. There is no evidence that they would have stopped (if anything was open at the time anyway).
If it is so bad try moving to Hackney where you will find property more expensive, the streets dirty, appalling schools, 10 times as many people, high crime rate, no parking anywhere, litter....
Go on try it for just a day I'm sure you will prefer Baldock (except for the shops not bothering to open).

SIR - Yet again I have opened your publication to find another Baldock resident complaining about the fact that businesses in the town are suffering since the construction of the bypass. Well frankly, what did they expect?
Weekly rantings by the locals wanting a bypass seem to have been replaced by weekly rantings by the locals about how difficult life has become since it's been built.
The phrase 'You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time' springs to mind.
