SIR - I would like to reply to Name and Address Supplied who commented in your last week's newspaper about Halloween.

As an American who grew up trick or treating I took great offence to this person calling this greatly anticipated night as bullying and implying that we all have 'weapons of mass destruction' in our bags.

Did this person know that this night is the night for children throughout the United States, while trick or treating, to ask for donations for UNICEF?

That tricks are asked for before treats are given? The tricks are little things that the child has to do before the treat is handed over. A song or poem could be asked to be recited. It's not revenge by the children.

I fear, as always, that you Brits don't understand Americans and their traditions and you put the worse explanation to a holiday that is fun, scary, and profitable for children in need.
