One of the more valuable services provided by the county council is the day centres, at which elderly and infirm residents can enjoy the company of others and a hot lunch under the auspices of a dedicated and caring staff.
The strike called by Unison forced these centres to close for the day thus depriving those members of the community least able to fend for themselves.
Surely the local union convenor could have exempted those members that carry out this welfare work without in any way diminishing the impact of the strike. Many local government workers have elderly relatives to consider and perhaps this callous attitude to their welfare may account for falling trade union membership.
