Regarding the mobile menace (April 20), on advice from a friend who works for the police in another country, I used to report to the traffic division any instances where I saw people using their mobile phones while driving, as long as I was able to note registration number, make, model and colour of the vehicle. Twice I was asked whether I would go to court as a witness, and I agreed. Then one person who took my call said she did not know why I bothered to report these incidents as the police could do nothing about them. I was very surprised, but she assured me that no action could be taken unless the incident had actually been seen by a policeman.

I am sorry, RTB, Hitchin, you and I and countless others are fed up with this highly dangerous, illegal driving habit, but there is not a thing we can do!
