I would like to contribute over one or two points to the correspondence about the increasing use of Rectory Lane as a cut through for speeding traffic.

Ministry of Transport figures for 2003 show that in that year 774 pedestrians were killed on our roads, 171 of those were children, 114 cyclists were killed and one can assume that a significant number of these too were children. Rectory Lane is crossed twice daily by groups and by single children on foot at precisely the most dangerous crossing point, the blind bend at one end. The lane is also used by some intrepid or oblivious children on bikes.

All of this seems to suggest that it is more by luck than judgement that we have not had a child fatality in Rectory Lane.
