Will World War II buildings start World War III?

This letter has been compiled by at least six residents from Campfield Way and Highover Road. We write in support of the author of 'Houses Must Go' in The Comet dated June 29. We want to let it be known that they are not alone in their thoughts. We also feel that reality has to be faced and like them we are entitled to our own opinion and can make up our own minds on the matter of our housing.

We, like most people here, are sad that the time has come for our homes to be replaced. We have all enjoyed living on this estate. NHH have seen us all and it does seem that what they have said to us and the offer that has been put to us is a good starting point for us to reach an amicable agreement on making rebuilding as painless as possible. NHH have been accused of lying and having a hidden agenda, but why should they lie to us when they know that we are already in a distressing situation.

We say now is the time to move forward, let them show us the plans and let's work together with them.

What is also very sad about all this is that the writer of 'Homes Must Go' feels they have to withhold their identity for fear of reprisals. This just shows how fearful people are of those who persist in this battle. Surely we are not to have a war among ourselves because some people hold different views. This is supposed to be a free land, let us make sure that free debate continues.

We want to be settled again and we must now see plans from NHH in order that we can move forward and get on with the rest of our lives. So Highover Road and Campfield Way Residents' Association, it is time to back off and let us get on with it.

Like the original writer we to are withholding our names, (but not out of fear) we just want to protect the innocent.

* In response to the person who wrote anonymously regarding the aluminium bungalows in Letchworth, I agree as an adult they are able to make up their own mind whether they want to stay, but why have they left it till North Herts Homes are proposing demolition of these properties to decide they do not like living in them anymore?

Surely they could have refused to live there or asked for a move before now? The divide and conquer tactics North Herts Homes are using to get residents out and the promises of same-sized properties with added conservatories and fish ponds will sound like a good enticement. But the majority of residents are elderly or disabled and do not want any more added stress than this disruption is causing them. I know of many people over the years who have asked to be moved into one of these homes should any become vacant - they have always been a popular choice of home. If residents want to go then yes, why not, if they can find suitable alternative accommodation, no-one is forcing them to stay. The people who want to stay need the Residents' Association and Letchworth Garden City councillors to help fight their cause.
