SIR - Well, this is a different letter to what I was going to say. But some residents have got their answer (What do the town council do?). For the answer look for old churches to buy at a cost of £800,000. So all you Letchworthians, when your council tax bill drops through the door in the next two weeks and you moan about the increase, just see how much the town council want and ask yourself did you really want them?

SIR - I have been reading the letters concerning Letchworth Garden City Town Council with great interest. I did not vote for a town council as I thought it to be unnecessary and an additional cost to the council tax payers. We already have an excellent forum for local people to express their concerns, the letters column of The Comet newspaper, and it is free!
Council tax payers are each paying at least £14 per year towards the cost of Letchworth Town Council for what seems very little return, and this cost is bound to rise each year. Now the sum of £400,000 has been suggested to purchase a place where they might meet. Who is going to pay for this? I would like to know if there is any way of voting not to continue to have a town council. Hitchin residents beware!
