Like most rail commuters I was shocked to read (The Comet 25 January) about the plans to change the train timetable from December this year for passengers from Letchworth. As you would expect, bad news can be quite successfully buried and I can find no clear reference to this on the website for First Capital Direct.

Trains are currently massively overcrowded and I am not sure exactly how, by reducing the number of trains or reducing the number of carriages, this is going to address that. The quality of the rail service that we receive directly affects our quality of life.

It costs a lot of money to buy a season ticket (£3,700, which is about £5,000 in untaxed income). I long ago accepted that I won't necessarily get a seat; I accept and welcome the fact that the 8.11am is reliably late every day, but that is where I draw the line. I think that the railway company needs to explain its actions to the people of the town and paying commuters.

As a Letchworth Garden City councillor, I have asked for this to be placed on the agenda for the next meeting of the council. This will take place on Thursday,h February 8, at the former Elim Church, which is at 269 Icknield Way, Letchworth Garden City. The meeting starts at 7.30.

I would be interested to hear the views of rail users in the town who I invite to attend to put their views to council, so that the council can form a policy and take action on this.

Alternatively contact myself on rosspe@talk21.com or register your concerns directly with the town clerk on 01462 682552 or visit the council website www.letchworthgardencity-council.org.uk. After all this is what the town council is here for - to speak up for the people of the town.
